More Than Just Inventing Instruments
Dr. Lee performed arthroscopic shoulder surgeries at Severance Hospital. Even when surgical outcomes were good, re-tears recurred, and for elderly patients, general anesthesia itself was a risk. “There must be a better approach than surgery” was the beginning of his non-surgical research.
The more he studied non-surgical care, the more he saw the limitations of existing methods. Shockwave was ineffective against hardened calcium. Injection aspiration could not remove chalk-type calcium. Plication sutures existed but only fixed the suture to the tendon, providing insufficient holding force and risking re-tear. And there was no separate method to promote ligament regeneration after suturing.
Dr. Lee developed solutions in four directions: a device to physically crush and aspirate hard calcium (No. 10-2798154); an improved device that simultaneously crushes and aspirates to minimize procedure time and tendon damage (No. 10-2836168); a knotless bioabsorbable anchor suture that fixes directly to bone (No. 10-2814890); and an injectable composition to promote ligament regeneration combined with suturing (No. 10-2855611).
