(Platinum Clinic) Daily Habits That Cause Rotator Cuff Tears and Muscle Pain

We'd like to share four daily habits that can cause rotator cuff tears and muscle pain. Everyday actions you do without thinking could be damaging your shoulder — please check each one carefully.

One habit that can lead to rotator cuff tears is sleeping on one side. Among patients who visit for shoulder muscle pain, many complain of pain in only one shoulder. In these cases, sleeping position is often the culprit. When sleeping on one side, your body weight puts strong pressure on that shoulder, reducing blood circulation and causing the muscles to become overly tense. Prolonged muscle tension while sleeping can lead to conditions like myofascial pain syndrome, and misaligned joints can irritate surrounding ligaments and tendons, potentially causing inflammatory conditions like impingement syndrome, frozen shoulder, or calcific tendinitis.

Another habit that can cause rotator cuff tears is your posture while using your phone. When using a smartphone with your head tilted down, your neck shifts forward and your shoulders round forward. Maintaining this position for extended periods can lead to cervical conditions like straight neck or text neck syndrome, and your scapula can shift forward, misaligning the shoulder. To prevent shoulder muscle pain and rotator cuff tears, hold your phone at eye level rather than looking down.

Driving posture can also cause rotator cuff tears. Driving with one hand or using a steering wheel knob raises arm position and strains the tendons. One-handed driving requires more shoulder rotation than two-handed driving, putting excessive tension on shoulder ligaments. To protect your shoulder joints, grip the lower part of the steering wheel with both hands and adjust the seat height so your hands are at shoulder level — this helps prevent rotator cuff tears and muscle pain. Many people also use outdoor exercise equipment at parks, but if the equipment's rotation circle is too large, it can force the range of motion beyond normal limits, leading to rotator cuff tears or muscle pain. Elderly individuals in particular have a contracted joint capsule due to degenerative changes, and forcing large rotations can cause rotator cuff tears or damage. Using massage devices at high intensity or receiving strong-pressure massages can also cause muscle pain. Massaging tense muscles too aggressively can actually increase muscle tension. Moderate pressure is more beneficial than intense pressure.
