Frozen Shoulder: NewPIMS Treatment Results for Adhesive Capsulitis

Hello. I'm Dr. Dongkyu Lee, an orthopedic specialist. Today, let's look at a NewPIMS treatment case for frozen shoulder. A 48-year-old female patient had been experiencing shoulder pain and limited range of motion for 1 year. Despite receiving numerous injections, shockwave therapy, and manual therapy at another hospital, symptoms didn't improve, so she came to our clinic. Physical examination showed limited range of motion and a mildly positive empty can test.

No notable findings on X-ray.

MRI shows the joint capsule outlined by the red dotted line has become significantly thickened and adhesed. Some inflammatory changes are also noted in the supraspinatus area.

Range of motion is limited to about 100 degrees of elevation.

Due to prolonged pain and lack of improvement despite multiple injections and manual therapy at another hospital, NewPIMS treatment (capsular adhesion release) was performed.

On the left ultrasound, the area outlined by the yellow dotted line shows the joint capsule. After NewPIMS treatment (capsular adhesion release), the right ultrasound shows the capsule expanded and widened.

Let's see the range of motion examination the day after the procedure:

The previously restricted left shoulder range of motion has recovered to near-normal the day after the procedure.

Frozen shoulder is medically known as adhesive capsulitis. It's a condition where inflammation develops in the joint capsule, causing adhesion that results in pain and restricted range of motion. Without proper treatment, the range of motion restriction may not resolve, with persistent pain and difficulty in daily activities. Of course, we don't jump to procedures immediately, but when appropriate injection therapy and rehabilitation haven't produced results, NewPIMS treatment (capsular adhesion release) can provide outstanding results. For those who have been suffering from frozen shoulder for a long time, this treatment can provide remarkable relief and healing.
